Mission
The Physical Education Major Program had its beginning at the State Teachers College in Hyannis in 1937. When the college closed in 1944, the State Teachers College at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ accepted the transfer of undergraduate women who were health and physical education majors. The Health and Physical Education Major Program was then established at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½, and in 1946 the alumni formed an association. All physical education graduates of Hyannis State Teachers College or ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ are considered members. Any physical education major who attended either of these institutions for at least one semester may also be a member.

Membership Requirements
ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ graduates who obtained a Physical Education or Health and Kinesiology degree or are teaching or working in a Physical Education or Health and Kinesiology related field.

The Comeau Award is given to a graduate of the Health and Kinesiology Department at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ who has been an alumnus/a for at least five years. The recipient must have demonstrated extraordinary interest in a profession related to health, physical education, or recreation.
The Damon Physical Education Scholarship Fund was established through a charitable gift from Ms. Jeanette (DiPaoli) Damon, ’54, in recognition of her undergraduate experience in physical education at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½. This scholarship will benefit a deserving female student majoring in Physical Education with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher who intends to become a physical education teacher.
The Dr. Mary Jo Moriarty Award is presented annually by the Physical Education Alumni Association to a member of the graduating class of the Health and Kinesiology Department. The recipient is selected on the basis of outstanding service to the department and the university.
The Professor Johanne Smith Award was established to honor Johanne Smith, professor emerita, of the Health and Kinesiology Department, and is awarded for outstanding teaching, leadership, commitment to excellence, and service to students and the teaching profession.
The Thornburg Physical Education Scholarship was established with a gift from Dr. Thornburg to be given to a deserving student majoring in Physical Education. Preference is given to students with a minimum GPA of 3.3 or higher, campus and/or community involvement, and documented financial need.
