Glendys Bonilla, ’27, came to ��ý with a keen interest in accounting. She didn’t consider a position with a top firm within reach — until she attended a career panel designed for first-generation students like herself.

The event featured an alumna who works as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a multinational company considered one of the Big Four accounting firms.

“If she’s first-gen and also graduated from ��ý, who’s to say I can’t do it as well?" said Glendys, who used that as motivation to apply for a two-year auditing internship at PwC. “I didn’t expect much, so when I got in, I couldn’t believe it.”

Glendys, an accounting and finance major and management minor, is one of several ��ý students interning at PwC. She is working on client projects by helping ensure bookkeeping is in order and free of fraud. Glendys also completed a tax internship at Nash CPAs in Norwood, her hometown.

As she transitions from student to professional, Glendys brings a solid background in financial terminology and processes from her classes, and strong teamwork and leadership skills from her extracurricular involvement.

“Everything I’m learning now is going to show up in the future, not only the accounting aspect,” said Glendys, who is president of the Latine Student Alliance and vice president of the Accounting and Finance Club. “Running clubs has taught me to work in groups.”

Through the Latin Student Alliance, Glendys helps organize campuswide cultural festivals and events. Club members became her close friends, and the organization offers a safe space that makes ��ý feel like home, she said.

She praised all of the accounting and finance professors for their support within and outside the classroom. Her advisor, Joseph D’Adamo, is a consistent source of career advice, while Donna Abelli offered Glendys a job as a peer leader for introductory accounting classes. Dr. Mark Crowley has been a valued mentor since her first year.

“He’s been one of my biggest motivators,” she said. “He has been the person who tells me I can do anything.”

Crowley praised Glendys as a well-rounded student with extensive accomplishments, including earning several accounting scholarships.

“Glendys is an excellent student and extraordinary contributor to the ��ý community,” he said.

Glendys credits ��ý with providing the supportive environment in which she has flourished.

“��ý has been great,” she said. “It has given me the opportunity to grow in all areas — academically, professionally, and socially.”

Digitizing documents and uncovering local history to keep the past accessible

History fades when no one saves it. At ��ý Stare University, Eric Morris, ’26, is helping make sure it doesn’t — a passion rooted in his early fascination with how the past shapes the present.

The history major is doing so under the guidance of ��ý’s senior librarian Orson Kingsley as an archival intern, not only learning about the institution’s past but also archiving regional history and cataloguing special collections.

Eric’s interest in history was sparked long before the internship, by teachers who explained it in a way that helped him make connections between the past and how the world is today and inspired him to want to dig deeper.

“History is endlessly fascinating,” he said. “Even when you learn one thing, it makes you want to learn more. It’s an endless rabbit hole.”

As an intern, he’s been working in the archives on the third floor of ��ý’s Maxwell Library.

One of his first tasks was digitizing the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League Collection housed in the library’s Archives & Special Collections, using the scanning machine to upload documents to give online access to researchers looking for information about the league.

Eric is currently working on a large map collection donated to the school, mostly by local residents. He uploads the metadata into finding aids on ��ý's ArchivesSpace website.

“Some of the maps were donated to us; some were rescued — one was even found in a dumpster,” he said.

The maps have also revealed more of the university’s background.

“I’ve seen banners from when it was founded as the Normal School and evolved over time. We also have a couple of maps made by students from the 1930s,” he said. “I haven’t found anything too surprising, but it’s been very gratifying and intriguing.”

Before Eric took part in the internship, his main goal was to become a historian, and to write journals and books. And while that’s still of interest to him, he also thinks becoming an archivist is a possibility.

“I already understood how important history is. But now, working within the archives, I really get it,” he said. “The past does not exist outside of human memory and surviving records. Once something has happened, if there are no records of it for people in the future to access, then, to them, it might as well have never happened, because they’ll never be able to know that it did.”

Because of this, Eric said, it’s important to leave a paper trail for generations to come.

“The archives are a place where civilization is preserved,” he said. “A place where the past will survive into the future. A place for people to learn and remember about things that happened, and apply it.”

Nerve to Write showcases disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent writers and artists

As Kaitlynn Davis, ’24, G’27, prepares for a career in publishing, she is already doing the work as an intern, helping launch a new magazine dedicated to amplifying voices often left out of the literary conversation.

Kaitlynn is one of five ��ý English graduate students interning for Nerve to Write, a digital publication that showcases the work of disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent writers and artists.

“This internship has helped me with my future career prospects and feeling confident in going forth in the literary and magazine editing field,” they said. “This has acted as a stepping stone for me to see what the environment is like and has given me the confidence to know that I can do this.”

While Nerve to Write is not a ��ý publication, its staff has numerous connections to the university. In addition to the five interns, English professor Sarah Fawn Montgomery serves as editor-in-chief, while English alumna Mialise Carney, ’19, is assistant editor.

“I was really excited to be able to work with Nerve to Write and maintain that connection with ��ý State,” said Carney, who credits ��ý with laying the foundation that propelled her into the creative writing and literature PhD program at the University of Cincinnati. “��ý State was a really meaningful part of my trajectory. I’m excited to give back.”

With experience in publishing and disability studies, Dr. Montgomery aims to create a magazine that serves writers whose voices are often omitted or limited to discussing their disabilities. The inaugural issue received hundreds of submissions of poetry, nonfiction, fiction, art and hybrid works.

“This seemed to be a gap in the publishing landscape,” said Montgomery, noting the magazine is quickly building a new literary community. “We wanted to fill in that gap.”

Interns are involved in numerous facets of the production process, including reviewing submissions, interviewing featured authors and collaborating with other publishers.

The staff hopes readers learn to appreciate disabilities as something to be celebrated rather than as a hindrance. Working on the magazine has already left a lasting impression on them.

“It gives me a nuanced perspective and a new way to look at it that I might have not known if I didn’t do this internship,” said Cassidy Rousseau, G’27, a high school English teacher. “It really helped me slow down and reflect on my own teaching practices and what I can do to help my students.”

Intern Emily Lapomardo has also taken the message to heart. Emily, who works with special education high school students, uses her newfound perspective in her interactions.

“It’s changed how I engage in conversations,” she said, adding she now tells students, “You are not limited by this. This is something to be celebrated.”

Olivia Quintin partners with renowned research institution for internship, thesis

Olivia Quintin, ’26, is fascinated by coral. To explore her passion further, she forged a research partnership between ��ý and one of the world’s most prestigious oceanographic research institutions.

Eager to chart her own path, Olivia contacted the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution about an internship. The biology major landed the position with key financial support from ��ý State.

“It’s been cool that I’ve been able to build my own opportunities,” said Olivia, who is from Fairhaven and is minoring in biochemistry. “��ý provides the resources to set yourself up for success.”

For her WHOI internship, which ��ý’s Bartlett Internship Program funded, Olivia analyzed 1,600 photos of coral living on ships and airplanes that sank near Palau in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. She helped WHOI biologist Dr. Kirstin Meyer-Kaiser compare corals on the shipwrecks’ man-made surfaces with those on natural reef structures.

Their work showed unique communities of coral based on the composition of the wrecks – such as steel or aluminum – and the horizontal or vertical orientation of wreck surfaces.

As her internship wrapped up, Olivia approached Meyer-Kaiser about pursuing an honors thesis. During a meeting with ��ý biological sciences professor Caitlin Fisher-Reid, the trio decided to search for a more cost effective and efficient way to genetically identify corals. Olivia is working to sequence a specific portion of a genome rather than the entire genome, a process that would facilitate identifying coral that can best withstand the effects of climate change.

That’s important because coral plays a critical role in ocean biodiversity, partly by forming physical reefs that provide habitat for fish and other marine life.

“There’s something special about coral itself,” Olivia said. “It is so essential in maintaining marine ecosystems.”

Olivia’s thesis blends her knack for hands-on lab work with Meyer-Kaiser's expertise in coral and Dr. Fisher-Reid's knowledge of genetics. It is unique to find this perfect blend of expertise, said Meyer-Kaiser.

Fisher-Reid and Meyer-Kaiser are impressed by Olivia’s research skills and motivation.

“She has really solid lab skills from her work with Caitlin,” Meyer-Kaiser said. “I also want her to take away the process of thinking like a scientist and being able to identify a problem and see a way to address it and then go for it. She has really embraced that.”

Meyer-Kaiser also praised the availability of ��ý funds, which made this experience possible amid federal cutbacks in science funding.

“It’s really easy to encourage my students to seek out these opportunities because I know that ��ý will support them when they get them,” added Fisher-Reid.

For Olivia, receiving funding through ��ý helped create a meaningful college experience that provides the foundation for a career in research.

“It was really nice to know I could pursue my academic interest while supporting myself financially,” she said. “It was really motivating.”

��ý program helps juniors land internships

As a first-generation college student, Diamond Hunter, ’26, is forging a new path for her family as she pursues a college degree.

Knowing she needed guidance and support from experts, Diamond participated in ��ý’s first Junior Career Launch program. Run by the Career Services and Internships office, the initiative offered hands-on workshops, guest speakers and resources to prepare students to seek internships.

“It made a huge difference,” said Diamond, a psychology major from the Dorchester section of Boston. “It gave me new experiences. I didn’t know how to find an internship, and this helped me. It made me very aware of how I could become a better version of myself and be successful.”

Diamond completed an internship with Central Boston Elder Services. She participated in community outreach to elderly residents to make sure their basic needs, including the medications they need, were met.

“It was very rewarding because I was able to make a difference in someone else's life,” she said.

Diamond is one of 16 students who participated in the career launch. Eleven of those students landed an internship this past summer, with several more securing positions in the fall. Students wrote and revised their resumes, participated in mock interviews and even attended an etiquette dinner that reinforced manners for dining at professional conferences and formal occasions.

Juniors are ideal for this program because they have begun taking advanced courses within their major and bring other experience such as undergraduate research or relevant part-time work to the table, said Katie Vagen, associate director of internships and career development.

“By junior year, they have a little more clarity on their career interests,” she said. “They’re more competitive in the internship search process.”

Waleed Jabak, ’26, used skills from Junior Career Launch to become an intern at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where the photonics major assisted with laser alignment and other technical processes that contributed to the facility’s cutting-edge research.

“I wanted to land an internship during the summer, and I knew this was a great opportunity that would help me achieve that goal,” he said.

The internship helped him hone skills within his major and positioned him well for the real world, post-graduation.

“The experience was very important,” he said. “It’s really the first step (toward securing employment after graduation).”

Senior’s internships and research prep her for cybersecurity career

When Aaliyah Oliveira’s parents face computer problems, they rely on her to figure out what is wrong. With a cybersecurity degree now within reach, Aaliyah is eager to put her tech savviness to use on a much larger scale.

“Being able to help people is a big factor,” Aaliyah, of Brockton, said of pursuing a cybersecurity and digital forensics degree at ��ý. “��ý has helped me figure out the career that I really wanted and pushed me to pursue this passion.”

As she begins her senior year, Aaliyah, who is of Cabo Verdean descent, is also excited to help diversify an industry responsible for protecting organizations and personal data. Just 4 percent of cybersecurity workers are Black women, she said.

Aaliyah has taken full advantage of ��ý’s extensive opportunities for transformative, hands-on education. This summer, she completed an internship at Waters Corp., a Milford-based manufacturer of medical equipment and software. She also studied the prevalence of cyberattacks on health care organizations before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with support from ��ý’s Adrian Tinsley Program for Undergraduate Research and Creative Work.

Aaliyah recently began interning at the Security Operations Center, a new facility on the ��ý campus that provides real-time threat monitoring and consulting services.

“Being able to apply what I’m learning in class to the real world is useful,” she said. “It’s not like I’m learning the material just to learn.”

She first dabbled in research as a freshman through the PISCES Scholars program, which provides scholarships, mentorship and resources to a select group of students pursuing STEM majors. Through PISCES, Aaliyah also became a tutor and worked with youngsters who visited ��ý for the annual Open Lab Night.

Aaliyah praised the support of ��ý faculty and staff including Katie Vagen, associate director of internships and career development. Vagen offered resume guidance that proved instrumental in securing an internship. Meanwhile, Dr. Cory Yeo, an assistant professor of computer science, has been a consistent mentor for Aaliyah.

“Dr. Yeo is the biggest supporter,” she said. “He’s given me advice, resources and study materials for certification exams.”

These connections, Aaliyah said, make a significant difference in helping her achieve her goals.

“I’ve gotten to know my professors and classmates one-on-one,” she said. “I’ve fostered a lot of relationships through ��ý.”

Rising senior brings desire to help others to a new major

Jalen Moore, ’26, admits he’s learned a lot in the classroom, but said it’s the internships at ��ý that have helped him gain real-world experience and a clearer vision in terms of his career goals.

“What you learn in classes is a lot of interdisciplinary work. It’s good. But internships have given me actual work experience. I’m not just learning from a book, but seeing how the work directly makes an impact,” Jalen said.

The rising ��ý senior initially wanted to pursue a career as a physical therapist, but after taking a class with Dr. Lydia Burak, he became a public health major.

“Prior to her class, I didn’t know much about public health, but Dr. Burak persuaded me to switch and showed me that public health is so broad, that there are many things you can do with it,” Jalen said.

Promoting health equity was also a driving force in his decision.

“Often in public health you immediately think of health as ‘wellness,’ but it’s also about how race, gender and identity can affect people and generational health,” Jalen said. “I really became interested because I want to come up with ways to prevent injustices and be a driving force in human advocacy and health equity.”

According to Jalen, Dr. Burak and Vinny DeMacedo, ��ý’s senior advisor for external relations, helped him secure his first internship working with Public Health Excellence Group out of Halifax. There he learned from health agents working at Public Health Departments in Halifax, ��ý, East ��ý, West ��ý, Middleboro, and Raynham.

His second internship was with Team Birth, a program run through the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he learned how to improve patient’s birthing experiences and outcomes. It also helped him realize what direction he wanted to explore career-wise – maternal health.

This summer, Jalen secured an internship as a maternal and health intern with Sister to Sister International, an organization that links women, girls, and families of African descent around the world to important resources.

The scope of his work includes updating materials on the Sister to Sister International website, attending monthly meetings, generating educational materials, and helping to connect women and girls of African descent to relevant resources. A lot of the work is done on a global level, further exposing Jalen to diverse communities and expanding his understanding of global outreach.

Each internship has reinforced his decision to pursue a major in public health. Upon graduating next spring from ��ý he knows he wants to work in a career that makes a difference.

“I really want to work on the community level, to install programming that improves things on a local level,” Jalen said. “I want to make personal connections, to listen to the stories, and to be part of the change, to help figure out ways to strengthen community.”

Senior embraces opportunities that bring her closer to her dream career

This summer Hailey Carter, ‘26, is honing in on her writing skills as a content-writer intern for Accessible Aerospace, an organization that makes aerospace education more inclusive and accessible.

As an English major at ��ý, she is thrilled to be able to use and strengthen her writing skills. Through the internship she has created content for educational materials, revised and edited submitted articles, and written her own articles.

“A lot of internships don’t give you the opportunity to come and take things in your own direction,” she said. “Here, I get to have ownership. I love educating other people and simplifying complex ideas for other people so they can understand it.”

Part of the internship involves collaborating with different people from across the globe. The exposure has contributed to Hailey’s career goals of video game writing and narrative design.

“When working on a project, it can be challenging to come together with multiple people to work on one idea. It’s really important to be able to do that, to learn how to work in a collaborating setting, where you are writing and editing and receiving feedback,” Hailey said.

The ��ý rising senior has always gravitated toward reading and writing, and particularly enjoys when she gets to create her own stories or worlds.

“In video games you have to build these worlds and characters with backstories. It’s one big puzzle that you have to make fit together,” she said. “The technology can be challenging, but I love creating something that either educates others or gives them the satisfaction of reading a good book or playing a good game.”

People are often surprised to learn about Hailey’s career goals; they aren’t able to connect the dots.

“They hear I’m an English major and assume I’m in it to write a book or teach. So many don’t realize that studying a language can open other doors,” she said.

Hailey arrived at ��ý after attending another school. Upon transferring that’s when she found her footing.

“Because of the community here, I’ve grown as a person, I’ve been able to develop confidence,” she said. “The professors are supportive and the (small) class sizes have helped me feel comfortable where I am able to ask questions and feel that I’m heard.”

As she enters her senior year at ��ý, Hailey looks to capitalize on other opportunities, including another internship where she can learn more about gamifying and virtual reality work.

“I will be keeping my eyes open for something that will allow me to get more experience and create a portfolio. Anywhere that I can express my creativity,” she said. “��ý has allowed me to pursue a career I’m passionate about because the school is invested in its students.”

Senior interns with WaterFire Providence

Nora Sperling, ’26, has always enjoyed visiting Providence for WaterFire, when on selected nights throughout the summer the city converts its three downtown rivers into a mesmerizing display featuring more than 80 glowing bonfires.

This summer, Nora is experiencing the famous art installation in a whole new way.

The ��ý communication major and marketing minor is a development intern with WaterFire Providence, the nonprofit that organizes the experience and operates an arts center.

“I realized it really aligned with what I wanted to do,” said Nora, who is from Berkley and aspires to work in public relations and marketing. “This is going to give me a lot of insights as well as experience.”

Nora helps the organization secure sponsorships and assists with event preparations for lightings. She is putting her writing and design skills to use by developing promotional materials and communicating with prospective sponsors.

“I’m definitely using my creative side,” she said. “I’ve taken digital marketing classes at ��ý and been able to use those skillsets to create things for WaterFire.”

This is a momentous summer for WaterFire, which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of lightings that have captivated more than 10 million visitors. The multi-sensory experience blends flickering firelight on Providence’s arched bridges with the fragrance of wood smoke and the sounds of music.

Nora is now part of the team that makes this a must-see Providence attraction. She has even ridden in a boat during a lighting, an experience she once only imagined.

Nora learned about the internship through an email from ��ý’s Department of Communication, a seemingly simple gesture that she said is emblematic of the culture she experiences at ��ý State.

“Something I’ve noticed about ��ý is the sense of community,” she said. “Everyone tries to help each other. Especially in the communication department, every professor tries to prepare you for life outside of ��ý.”

While Nora’s internship dovetails nicely with her professional ambitions, she encourages fellow students to be open to trying something new.

“Go for it. 100 percent,” she said of pursuing an internship. “Even if you don’t think it completely aligns with what you want to do in the future, do it. Experience is experience.”

Security Operations Center opens and is a boon to region and students

Luis Marin and Brian Grier, both members of the class of 2026, are on the front lines of a battle to protect organizations from potentially devastating cyber-attacks. And they are doing this essential work right from the ��ý campus.

Luis and Brian intern at ��ý’s Security Operations Center (SOC). The SOC provides real-time threat monitoring as well as consulting services to organizations throughout Massachusetts.

“It feels like real life,” said Brian, a cybersecurity major and Asian studies minor from Milford. “This is not a simulation. We have real clients. Every day of the week we’re solving problems that they deal with.”

The center is part of a comprehensive program to prepare the next generation of cybersecurity leaders. ��ý also boasts a state-of-the-art cyber range where students and professionals train using simulated scenarios. The university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the rapidly growing field.

The SOC, which opened its permanent space on campus in December, is co-sponsored by ��ý and the nonprofit CyberTrust Massachusetts, which strives to grow and diversify the cyber workforce.

“By integrating students directly into real-world cybersecurity operations in a real SOC environment, we’re not only enhancing their educational experience but also contributing significantly to the security and well-being of our local communities,” said ��ý President Frederick W. Clark Jr., ’83.

CyberTrust Massachusetts hires students like Luis and Brian for paid internships where they work alongside professionals in serving the SOC’s clients. Those clients currently include an array of municipalities and school districts, with plans to expand to other sectors.

��ý is a strong partner in this effort because of its growing cybersecurity curriculum, said Jeff Cassidy, director of cybersecurity operations for CyberTrust Massachusetts.

“We’re glad to support what they’re learning in the classroom with hands-on experience,” Cassidy said.

That is critical to landing a job after graduation, said Brian, who progressed into a more advanced internship where he is helping mentor new interns.

It is also rewarding to make a positive impact in the community while still in school, Luis said.

Luis, who completed an associate degree in cybersecurity from Bunker Hill Community College, transferred to ��ý State specifically to enroll in the cybersecurity major.

“��ý is thinking about the future,” he said. “They see where the technology is going. With this program, they are preparing so many professionals.”
